In 1909, Gebr. Pierburg oHG was founded as a steel trading company. In 1926, it aquired a backrupt Arthur Haendler & Cie, a carburetor manufacturer, and two year later began to produce their own carburetors. Forming Deutsche Vergaser-Gesellschaft (DVG) in 1935, their great success was closely tied to Germany's arms industry during WWII. Postwar, now a new company called Neuss, became very successful in producing Pierburg carburetors for Volkswagen as well as Audi, Mercedes-Benz, BMW, and Volvo. Pierburg often produced carburators under license with Solex/Zenith-Stromberg resulting to co-branding. In 1986, Pierburg was taken over by Rheinmetall AG. In 1998, it merged with Kolbenschmidt to form Kolbenschmidt Pierburg AG, or KSPG AG, then known as Rheinmetall Automotive until 2021 when it became defunct.

The Pierburg 1 B 1 is a single-stage, downdraft carburetor manufactured by Pierburg (often branded as Solex/Pierburg). Primarily used throughout the 1980s and early 1990s, it is easily identified by its manual choke (distinguishing it from the automatic choke 1 B 3 model).
