This tool makes removal and installation easier, without damaging the plastic retainer ring. However, the ring can usually be removed/installed without using this tool. By holding a flat-blade screwdriver or punch against the outer edge of the ring and on one of the ribs, gently tap with a hammer. The ring has typical right-handed threads: counterclockwise for removal; clockwise for installation.
