Bombardier Iltis
Early Models
The Musée de l’ingéniosité J. Armand Bombardier in Valcourt, Quebec, Canada has an early model in their inventory. Different than later production models built for the Canadian Armed Forces, this tailgate model has a turbo diesel engine, no front brush gaurd, no blackout lights, alternative rear bumpers with standard lights mounted above, and marker lights on the front fenders.
From the museum:
All-terrain, 4-wheel drive military vehicle manufactured under license by Bombardier Inc.; Logistic Equipment Division. In 1982, the company acquired the worldwide manufacturing and distribution rights from Volkswagen A.G. This vehicle is the first Iltis model, equipped with a turbo diesel engine and produced by Bombardier Inc. It was built to military specifications, with a 24-volt electrical system and an off-road driving capability of 4 km/h, or that of soldiers on foot. Although the frame was waterproof, the vehicle was not armoured or bulletproof.
