7.When removing the spare wheel carrier and fuel can bracket, all bolt holes must be plugged using the previously removed bolts, washers and nuts. Before installing the old bolts, spread silicon or rubber sealant around the edge of the holes to prevent rust.

8.To remove the spare wheel carrier, proceed as follows:

  1. Remove and retain the wheel carrier lower mounting screws, nuts and washers.
  2. Remove the wheel carrier upper mounting screws and remove the wheel carrier assembly. Retain the nuts and discard the screws.
  3. Apply silicone or rubber sealant around the circumference of each hole in the vehicle body where the screws have been removed.
  4. Plug the upper holes in the vehicle body using the previously removed nuts and the M8 x 16 mm long screws, see paragraph 6. Item 16.
  5. Plug the lower holes using the previously removed screws, nuts and washers.
  6. Tighten all nuts and wipe off all excessive sealant.
  7. Retain the spare wheel carrier assembly for installation.

9.Before installing the spare wheel carrier ensure the vehicle tailgate is properly locked in the closed position. To install the spare wheel carrier to the rear of the vehicle as follows:

NOTE — All reference numbers shown in parentheses (  ) refer to the item numbers in paragraph 6.

  1. See Figure 1. Remove and discard the two existing screws located directly below the vehicle right side tailgate securing latch.
  2. See Figure 2. Install the spacer (7) and clamp (6) and secure using two flat washers (20), lock washers (21) with screws (14).
  3. See Figure 3. Remove and discard the two existing screws located under the vehicle tailgate and immediately to the left of the tailgate right side hinge. If the screws are rusted, use penetrating oil to loosen.
  4. Install the previously removed spare wheel carrier assembly so the right arm of the carrier fits through the installed clamp (see Figure 1).
  5. See Figure 4. Fit the lower mounting bracket to the existing screw holes and install the spacer (8) between the vehicle frame and lower mounting bracket. Secure the bracket using two flat washers (2), lock washers (21) with screws (15).
  6. With an 8 mm drill bit, and using the spare wheel carrier as a template, drill through the three existing left side holes in the carrier cross-member and through the tailgate.

NOTE — Do not drill through the fourth hole which is located near the upper mounting clamp, see Figure 1.

  1. See Figure 5. Secure the spare wheel carrier cross-member using the three screws (11) with flat washers (19) and self-locking nuts (18).

10. To remove the fuel can bracket, which is located on the left rear side of the vehicle, proceed as follows:

  1. Remove the screws which secure the strap retainer. Retain the screws, nuts and washers. Discard the strap retainer assembly.
  2. Remove the screws which secure the fuel can bracket to the vehicle body. Retain the screws, nuts, washers and fuel can bracket with strap. Discard the two wooden spacers.
  3. Apply silicon or rubber sealant around the circumference of each hole in the vehicle body where screws have been removed.
  4. Plug all the holes using the previously removed screws, nuts and washers. Tighten nuts and wipe off all excessive sealant.

11.To install the fuel can bracket to the rear of the vehicle, proceed as follows:

NOTE — All reference numbers shown in parentheses (  ) refer to the item numbers in paragraph 6.

  1. See Figure 7. Remove and discard the three existing 6 mm screws located approximately 9 mm to the left of the tailgate.
  2. See Figure 6. Install the fuel can bracket support (1) to fit the mounting holes and secure the support to the vehicle body using 3 screws (17) with flat washers (22) and lockwashers (23).

NOTE — Before drilling the holes, ensure the tailgate is locked in the closed position.

  1. See Figure 7. With an 8mm drill bit, and using the support (1) as a template, drill the opposite two holes through the vehicle tailgate.
  2. See Figure 6. Install a flat washer (21) on each screw (13) and insert the screws through the drilled holes in the support (1) and tailgate. Secure the support using two self-locking nuts (18) with large OD flat washers (19).
  3. See Figure 7. Fit the fuel can bracket to the support (1) and secure using the screws (9) with self-locking nuts (10).
  4. See Figure 8. Measure and scribe the location of the fuel can strap retainer on the upper left corner of the tailgate, above the latch assembly.
  5. With an 8 mm drill bit, drill two holes through the tailgate.
  6. See Figure 9. Assemble the rubber bumpers (5) to the strap retainer (2), fit the screws (12) through the holes in the strap retainer and assemble the strap, strap plate (3), bushings (4) and large OD flat washers (19) on each screw.
  7. Insert the assembled screws (12) through the drilled holes in the tailgate and secure using large OD flat washers (19) with self-locking nuts (18).
  8. Before tightening, adjust the strap buckle to suit the installation.

12.LETE task number 83603-L035.
